Rep. Davis Votes Against Bankrupt Budget

WASHINGTON, DC – Last night, Congressman Jim Davis voted against the House leadership’s bankrupt budget resolution and called on Congress to take steps to begin paying down the nation’s $8.3 trillion federal debt.  The resolution passed by a vote of 218 to 210.  Below is a statement from Rep. Davis:

“The last time I checked, a leader is supposed to set a good example, but if America’s families were to follow Congress’ lead when it comes to budgeting, they’d all go bankrupt.  The budget passed today places an overwhelming debt on the backs of America’s children and grandchildren and calls for huge tax breaks while cutting funds for America’s veterans, school children, sick and poor.”

“Rather than offering a plan to bring the federal budget back into balance, this budget resolution will add another $2.3 trillion to the federal debt over the next five years.

“At a time when every American’s share of the federal debt is nearly $27,900, Congress should be enacting budget enforcement mechanisms, such as the Pay-As-You-Go (PAYGO) provisions, which force the government to live within its means.  Instead, the House has passed a budget resolution that continues to drive up the debt at the expense of America’s most vulnerable citizens.

“Instead of voting for this bankrupt budget plan, I supported an alternative resolution that would bring the federal budget back into balance by 2012, enact PAYGO rules and protect America’s families.  I hope the Senate will consider this alternative.”
