Congressman Jim Davis’ Statement on

President Bush’s State of the Union Address

WASHINGTON, DC - Congressman Jim Davis released the following statement in reaction to President Bush’s 2006 State of the Union Address:

“This year, as our nation faces enormous challenges at home and abroad, Congress and the President must put politics aside and take steps to provide long term solutions to America ’s problems.”

“The United States’ national debt has surpassed a staggering $8 trillion.  Spending habits like these are irresponsible in any family budget and reprehensible in the federal budget.  President Bush talked about strengthening our economy, yet he has allowed burgeoning deficits to crowd out economic prosperity and compromise the financial future of America’s next generation.  I hope the President’s proposed budget will put money where his mouth is.

“As the President considers ways to help Americans struggling with the high cost of health care, I hope his first step will be to help seniors struggling to make sense of the Administration’s new Medicare prescription drug plan.  The President should support legislation to delay the deadline for enrollment in Medicare Part D.  Furthermore, to reduce the cost of the program, President Bush should allow the Department of Health and Human Services to negotiate with drug companies for lower prices on the medications used by Medicare beneficiaries.

“Americans are also struggling with the high prices at the pump.  This Administration has repeatedly proposed spoiling Florida’s beaches with oil rigs in the Eastern Gulf of Mexico – a reckless and short sighted proposal which would do nothing to address current gas prices.  Tonight, I commend President Bush for calling for the development of alternative energy sources – an important part of a long term solution to America’s energy needs.

“Finally, with countless U.S. service men and women stationed across the globe, Congress and the President must work to ensure our troops in the field and our troops here at home – local law enforcement and emergency responders – have the resources they need to keep our country and communities safe.”
