Rep. Davis Hosts Medicare Rx Town Hall Meeting

Rep. Davis talks with seniors about the new Medicare Rx Drug Benefit

TAMPA – On Monday, November 7, Congressman Jim Davis hosted a town hall meeting to provide information about the new Medicare Prescription Drug Benefit.

On January 1, 2006 , under the Medicare Prescription Drug Benefit (Medicare Part D), Medicare beneficiaries will become eligible for prescription drug coverage offered through new private drug plans and managed care plans.  To avoid late penalties, beneficiaries must enroll in this new benefit by May 15, 2006 .

Unfortunately, just two months before this program is up and running, there remains much confusion among Medicare beneficiaries about the new benefit.  Rep. Davis’ town hall meeting gave beneficiaries the opportunity to learn about their options for prescription drug coverage.

The event included presentations by AARP Florida, Medicare Today and the National Committee to Preserve Social Security and Medicare.  In addition, Tampa Bay area providers distributed information about the various prescription drug plans available in our region.

Rep. Davis opposed the bill that created the drug benefit because it provides inadequate coverage and no limits on premiums.  However, now that the law is enacted, Davis wants to help Medicare beneficiaries make the best decision about whether to enroll and, if so, which plan best meets their needs.
