Rep. Davis Encouraged by Gov. Bush’s
First Step
to Address Education Accountability
Problems
WASHINGTON
,
DC
– Today, Congressman Jim Davis sent a letter
to Governor Jeb Bush applauding him for finally taking steps to try and
address
Florida
’s education accountability problems.
Davis
urged the Governor to ensure that schools continue to help disadvantaged
students meet high standards.
Last year,
68 percent of
Florida
’s schools earned an “A” or a “B” under the Florida A+
Education Plan, but 77 percent of schools failed to earn “Adequate
Yearly Progress” under the federal No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act.
Rep. Davis twice wrote to Gov. Bush urging him to address the
State’s education accountability problems before many of Florida’s
best schools were forced to redirect vital Title I education funds out
of the classroom as a penalty for continued NCLB failure.
“I
strongly support accountability in education, but Governor Bush’s
implementation of the No Child Left Behind Act is punishing many of the
students, parents and teachers who have worked so hard to earn ‘As’
and ‘Bs’ under the Florida A+ Plan,” said Congressman Davis.
“An accountability plan should help parents and teachers
understand how their students and schools are doing, not create
confusion. I am glad to see
that the Governor has recognized the need to address this problem.”
