CONGRESSMAN JERRY LEWIS STATEMENT ON BREAKUP OF TERROR PLOT IN BRITAIN

WASHINGTON – Congressman Jerry Lewis issued the following statement regarding the breakup by British police of a terrorist plot to blow up airliners headed to the United States :

            “The discovery of an apparently well-organized Islamic terrorist group in Great Britain is a chilling reminder that these enemies of America and its freedoms are not confined to the Middle East . We should be grateful that British authorities were carefully watching the potential terrorists in their midst and stopped this horrific plan before it could be put into action.

            “We have heard a rising chorus of criticism against President Bush’s efforts to ensure that we utilize intelligence resources in our country to provide similar vigilance against those who would attack us on American soil. The events in Britain ought to demonstrate to everyone that the terrorists are deadly serious, and have no intention of limiting their activities to the Middle East .

            “We know that there is every probability that there are similar terrorist cells here in our country, and we must do everything we can to defend ourselves right here at home. To do anything less puts our citizens in jeopardy of the kind of terrible attacks that apparently have been stopped by the British.”
