The American Flag

When Freedom from her mountain height
Unfurled her standard to the air,
She tore the azure robe of night,
And set the stars of glory there.
She mingled with its gorgeous dyes
The milky baldric of the skies,
And striped its pure celestial white
With streakings of the morning light;
Then from his mansion in the sun
She called her eagle bearer down,
And gave into his mighty hand
The symbol of her chosen land.

The red, white and blue American flag is the most visible symbol of the United States of America. It is instantly recognizable here at home and abroad as a powerful sign of freedom and the rule of law.

According to U.S. law (Title 36, Chapter 10, Section 176) "the flag represents a living country and is itself considered a living thing."

American flags that have flown over the U.S. Capitol are available to the public.

Senator Bond can arrange to have an American flag flown over the United States Capitol for Missourians.

The flags can be flown on any day of the year to honor special occasions, events, and holidays. An authentic certificate will accompany each flag showing the day it was flown and the occasion for which it was flown.

Missourians interested can contact Susan in Senator Bond's Washington D.C. office at (202) 224-5721, or download our Flag Order Form and mail it to the Office of Senator Kit S. Bond, 274 Russell Senate Office Building, Washington, D.C. 20510.

Due to a recent swell of patriotism following the September 11th attacks and the recent anthrax scares, please allow twelve weeks for flag requests to be completed. Thank you.

You will need Adobe Acrobat Reader to view this file. If you don't have the reader, you can get it for free from the Adobe Systems Web site.

Please include the mailing address for the flag, a daytime phone number, whom the flag is being flown for and for what occasion (if any).

Checks must be made out to: "Keeper of the Stationery." Your check for the flag and your order form must arrive in the Washington, D.C. office TEN days prior to the date you would like the flag flown.

Checks for orders will not be accepted more than a year in advance.

If more than one flag is requested to be flown on different days, please send separate checks for each flag. If the flags are the flow on the same day, only one check for the total amount of the flags is required.

Flags can also be purchased without being flown and flying costs would not apply.

If you would like your flag flown over the Capitol, there is a charge of $4.05 per flag. There is also a shipping and handling fee of $4.00 per flag.

We only have access to American flags. We do not have and cannot fly Missouri flags.

All flags are made in the U.S.A. and are available for the prices listed on the flag order form.
