Brown V Board

On May 17, 1954, the United States Supreme Court announced its decision that "separate educational facilities are inherently unequal."  The decision effectively denied the legal basis for segregation in Kansas and 20 other states with segregated classrooms and would forever change race relations in the United States. Fulfilling the Promise

Protect Head Start. There are 297,000 African American children currently being served in the Head Start program. Democrats oppose Administration proposals to weaken Head Start and will work to strengthen and expand the program so that all children enter school ready to learn.

Open the Doors of Opportunity to All. Democrats will continue to press the Administration for the funds necessary to successfully implement federal school reforms, ensure teacher quality, support high standards, reduce class sizes, and provide strong math and science programs.

After-School Programs. Democrats are committed to providing adequate federal support for after-school programs, which have proven an effective way to reduce juvenile crime and improve overall education performance.

Make College More Affordable. Democrats oppose Republican proposals to cut funding for student loans and grants. Democrats have a plan to make college tuition tax deductible up to $12,000 per year for middle class families, and we support increases in funding for Historically Black Colleges and Universities.
