Washington, DC – Today, U.S. Representative William Jefferson (D-LA) boarded Air Force One with President Bush to fly to New Orleans and celebrate National Volunteer Week. Jefferson is expected to discuss a range of issues with the President including the President’s most recent request for an additional $2 billion in levee funding.
“This opportunity to both speak candidly with the President and honor those who have given their days, weeks and Spring Breaks to serve our community is an honor,” Jefferson said. “National Volunteer Week certainly has meaning in the Gulf region as so many have given their time and effort to our cause. I look forward to thanking those Americans who have committed to rebuilding New Orleans and I will urge the President to continue his commitment to us as well.”
Jefferson flew with the President from Andrews Air Force Base in Washington, D.C. The White House will release details of the travel schedule.
“I am also excited about the opportunity to discuss with the President the most pressing issues relating to rebuilding New Orleans and the Gulf Coast,” Jefferson continued. “Our work in New Orleans and along the coast is not done and I hope to share with him many of the challenges our schools, our healthcare system and our residents still face as we continue to work hard rebuilding our lives.” |
