FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Friday, November 10, 2006
WASHINGTON, DC –Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (D-MD) today released the following statement in celebration of Veterans Day, which will be observed tomorrow.
“Americans celebrate this Veterans Day at a time of ongoing global threats to our nation’s security. As American troops fight terrorism around the world, it is particularly important to honor the 25 million living American veterans, especially those who have recently returned from battles overseas.
“Nearly 3,000 U.S. troops have now died in Iraq, including 53 brave men and women from Maryland. Like all Americans, I mourn the loss of these brave patriots.
“Supporting our troops requires that we treat them with dignity and respect upon their return home. The newly elected Democratic Congress will honor our veterans with a new GI Bill of Rights for the 21st Century that provides access to health care, education, job training, and fair compensation.
“Since our nation’s founding, America’s safety, strength, and freedom have rested securely on the shoulders our troops. We are eternally grateful for all the men and women that endure the sacrifice of service.”
