Rep. Taylor Announces Grant to Replace Buses in the City of Asheville

Washington, Sep 15, 2005 - Western North Carolina Representative Charles Taylor announced today approval of a grant to replace old buses and make other improvements to the mass transit system in the City of Asheville. Representative Taylor, a senior member of the House Appropriations Committee, secured the funds – in the amount of $101,353 – through the Fiscal Year 2005 Transportation Appropriations conference report. The grant will help pay for the replacement of five thirty foot buses, two less than thirty foot buses, mobile security equipment, and bicycle equipment. These vehicles will also be equipped with wheelchair lifts and all other required systems under the Americans with Disabilities Act.

“I am pleased that I was able to help secure these funds for the many citizens who depend on public transportation in the Asheville area,” said Rep. Taylor. “With energy costs at an all-time high, these improvements will hopefully encourage others to take advantage of the mass transportation services that are available in the city.”

In the past, the City of Asheville has replaced its entire fleet of buses at one time. Transit and Parking Services Director Bruce Black says that approach has led to high maintenance costs because the buses all begin to wear out at the same time. Black says the new federal funds will allow the city to begin “staggering” the purchase of public buses.

“This is very good news for the City and we appreciate Congressman Taylor’s efforts on our behalf,” said Black. “This will ultimately help us to reduce our maintenance costs and run a more cost-efficient service.”
