Meeting with Veterans Attending WWII Memorial Dedication
29 May 2004
U.S. Rep. Jay Inslee (WA-01) met today with World War II veterans and their families from Washington State who are visiting Washington, D.C. to attend the dedication of the National World War II Memorial. Among the local World War II veterans in attendance were John Nutting and Earl Horn, both of whom are residents of Edmonds in Snohomish County. John Nutting served on a Navy aircraft carrier during the war, while Earl Horn served in Europe and played a role in the liberation of the Dachau concentration camp. Janice Silva of Bainbridge Island also made the trip to D.C. to accompany her father, a World War II Veteran and Purple Heart recipient. Inslees father, Frank Inslee, who is a veteran of World War II also attended the meeting and Saturdays ceremonies.
The National World War II Memorial was authorized by Congress in 1993 (Public Law No: 103-32). A weekend of events marked the completion of the World War II Memorial to honor America's WWII generation, including the actual dedication of the Memorial on the National Mall today.
Commenting on the Memorial, Inslee said, This is such a fitting tribute to a generation that gave so much and asked so little. The Washington Monument, the Lincoln Memorial and the World War II Memorial join in one location Americas tribute to those who stood fast in three of the great armed crises in the American democratic experiment the Revolutionary War against the monarchy, the Civil War against rebellion, and World War Two against fascism.
