Inslee Makes Grant Announcement
Federal Funds for Bulletproof Vests

26 June 2003

U.S. Rep. Jay Inslee announced today that a number of local communities in the First Congressional District together will receive over $47,000 in grants from the Department of Justice for the purchase of bulletproof vests. These funds were authorized under legislation passed by Congress and supported by Inslee, the Bulletproof Vest Partnership Grant Act of 2000. This funding program is aimed at all municipalities, but smaller communities under 100,000 inhabitants receive first priority. Twenty five percent of the vests’ costs must be matched by the local agency. Detailed grant information is below.

“Our law enforcement officers deserve the highest respect for serving our communities with valor and determination,” said Inslee. “We also owe these officers the best safety equipment possible, and the funds announced today will help to achieve that goal. Recent officer injuries in Washington state demonstrate how important it is to protect our officers. Everyone hopes that no officer is injured in the line of duty, and we can all work to ensure these risks are reduced as much as possible. Safer officers mean safer communities. I am happy that the federal government can help make our communities safer through these funds.”
