Fire prevention in Snohomish County gets boost

U.S. Rep. Jay Inslee announced that the Snohomish County Fire District 1 has been awarded a $32,200 federal grant for smoke alarms and education targeting at-risk populations – senior citizens and apartment dwellers.

Brame tragedy spurs federal domestic-violence program

The tragic case of Crystal Judson Brame, a Tacoma woman murdered by her police chief husband in April 2003, was the impetus behind a ground-breaking domestic violence grant program that was approved by the Senate. It’s the first time the federal government specifically has addressed the sensitive issue of domestic violence committed by law-enforcement officials.

Local Law Enforcement Programs Funded

Funding levels were released by House and Senate negotiators for programs pushed by U.S. Rep. Jay Inslee to keep police officers in King County schools and help Kitsap County law-enforcement officials track criminals, among other statewide projects.

Bothell Firefighters to Benefit from Defense Bill

U.S. Rep. Jay Inslee announced today that Snohomish County Fire Protection District #10, which contracts with the City of Bothell Fire and E.M.S. for emergency medical services, will receive much-needed land to construct a new Queensborough Firehouse under a provision that Inslee included in the Defense Authorization Act.

Grant for North Kitsap Fire and Rescue

North Kitsap Fire and Rescue will receive a federal grant of $206,855 to replace its 10-year old self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) system with 42 complete new SCBA units – enough units to allow each firefighter to have his or her own face piece.

Ferry Security

[ October 2004 ]

U.S. Reps. Inslee and Larsen received a classified briefing from the U.S. Coast Guard, as well as a non-classified briefing from top officials with the Washington State Ferries and the Washington State Patrol, on new ferry security measures that were instituted in October 2004. Inslee still believes that when implementing new safety measures, our new policies should take into account Washington state’s unique ferry system.

2005 COPS Funding

Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) is an integral part of combating crime and improving the quality of life by placing police officers on the streets and in the community. Community policing stresses the prevention of crime before it occurs. Inslee lobbied the House Appropriations Committee to increase funding for the hiring component of the Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) program in FY2005 appropriation, and Snohomish and Kitsap Counties received a total of $1,609,216 for Fiscal Year 2005.

U.S. Rep. Inslee is also worked hard to make Kitsap County a part of the Northwest High-Intensity Drug Trafficking Area (HIDTA) to stop the flow of drugs and drug-related crimes into the country. HIDTA, part of the Office of National Drug Control Policy, works to reduce drug trafficking in the most critical areas of the country by providing a coordination umbrella for local, state, and federal law enforcement efforts.

Million Mom March and Gun Safety

U.S. Rep. Inslee joined the Million Mom March at the Seattle Center to "Halt the Assault." Rally supporters were among the majority of Americans who support the Assault Weapons Ban that expired on September 13, 2004.

Bangor Submarine Accident

[ 19 March 2004 ]

U.S. Rep. Jay Inslee (WA-01) received a classified briefing today, along with U.S. Rep. Norm Dicks (WA-06), from Navy Admiral Charles Young regarding the reported incident involving a damaged nuclear missile at Naval Submarine Base Bangor. Said Inslee, “Congressman Dicks and I received a very detailed briefing today giving us the exact details regarding the incident that occurred on November 7 at Bangor."

Grant for Redmond's Friends of Youth

U.S. Reps. Jay Inslee and Adam Smith announced today that Redmond’s Friends of Youth will receive a $223,538 Economic Development Initiative (EDI) grant from the Department of Housing and Urban Development. Friends of Youth operates a treatment center, the Griffin Home, in Renton, WA, for severely troubled adolescent boys with a history of juvenile offenses or aggressive sexual behavior.

New Port Security Regulations May Slow WA Ferries

U.S. Rep. Jay Inslee commended the Coast Guard today for taking into account Washington state’s unique ferry system needs in new port security regulations released today. Inslee still has concerns about funding for the new regulations and how they will affect Washington commuters.

Federal Funds for Bulletproof Vests

[ 26 June 2003 ]

U.S. Rep. Jay Inslee announced today that a number of local communities in the First Congressional District together will receive over $47,000 in grants from the Department of Justice for the purchase of bulletproof vests. These funds were authorized under legislation passed by Congress and supported by Inslee, the Bulletproof Vest Partnership Grant Act of 2000.

Homeland Security Funding

U.S. Rep. Jay Inslee gave a five-minute speech about the additional money headed to the City of Seattle for homeland security costs on the floor of the House of Representatives today. Inslee is concerned that smaller communities, such as Bothell and Monroe, have yet to receive Homeland Security funding.
