As a senior member of the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on
Defense, Tom Harkin has pursued an active legislative agenda to support
our troops, take on the war on terror, and fight government waste in
defense spending. It has long been his belief that our troops need to
be properly trained and prepared in times of combat, but also cared for
when they return home.
Iowa plays an important role in the strength of our nation's defenses,
and Senator Harkin has secured funding for Rock Island Arsenal, as well
as Iowa universities and companies to continue research and production
efforts. Senator Harkin knows these important investments bolster
Iowa's economy and help to fortify America's defenses.
Iowa Service Members
Iowans have a long tradition of answering the call to serve and defend
our country. Thousands of members of the Iowa National Guard and
Reserve have been mobilized since September 11, 2001. At great
personal sacrifice, they have forward-deployed to support operations
abroad and homeland security missions in the United States, leaving
loved ones and their communities behind.
Iowa Reservists have played an equally important role in serving their
nation in the war on terror. Since September 11, thousands of Iowa
reservists have been mobilized. Like their brethren in the Guard, these
Reserve forces have been asked to serve long tours of duty that
interrupt family and career. In May of 2004, a group of 700 members of
the Iowa Guard were sent to Afghanistan for 14 months. This
represents the largest single unit from the Iowa National Guard to be
sent abroad since World War II. An overseas deployment in excess
of a year for the citizen-soldier is a significant disruption of life
and career.
Senator Harkin salutes the many Iowa service members and their families
who have made tremendous sacrifices in our nation's fight to win the
global war on terrorism and thanks them for their service. With even
greater solemnity, he offers his gratitude to the families of those
Iowa sons that have lost their lives in this war. As a strong supporter
of the Guard and Reserve, a former active duty sailor and Reservist,
and a member of the committee that funds the armed services, Senator
Harkin is committed to fully supporting our guardsmen and
reservists and their families, both while they are deployed and after
they return home.
