Floor Situation

The House is scheduled to consider H.R. 3085 under suspension of the rules on Monday, July 17, 2006.  The bill is debatable for 40 minutes, may not be amended, and requires a two-thirds majority vote for passage.

Summary

H.R. 3085 would direct the Secretary of the Interior to study the feasibility and suitability of adding various land routes and sites to the Trail of Tears National Historic Trail, including the popular Bell and Benge routes. Congress designated the Trail of Tears National Historic Trail in 1987. The Trail encompasses the primary water route and northern land route used the forced removal of the Cherokee Nation from its homelands in the southeastern United States to present-day Oklahoma.

H.R. 3085 was introduced by Rep. Wamp (TN) on June 28, 2005.  The bill was ordered to be reported in the nature of a substitute, as amended, by unanimous consent, on June 21, 2006. House Report 109-549 was filed on July 10, 2006.
