Hoyer Praises New Hubble Mission

On October 31, Congressman Hoyer commended NASA on their recent decision to send a fifth service mission to the Hubble Space Telescope. The mission would bring badly needed cameras, batteries and gyroscopes to the Hubble, which first launched in 1990. Without these critical repairs and replacements, the Hubble would likely stop operating by fall of 2008. But this mission should keep the telescope running through 2013.

Congressman Hoyer represents NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center, which operates the Hubble. Some four hundred and fifty Maryland workers tend the telescope and manage its scientific research, and the recently announced mission will bring another thirty to forty high-tech science jobs to the area. Rep. Hoyer has a long record of supporting the Hubble Telescope and Goddard.

Hoyer Receives High Honors from Civil Rights Leadership Conference

The Leadership Conference on Civil Rights (LCCR), the nation’s oldest and largest civil and human rights coalition, awarded Congressman Hoyer a 100% score on its annual Congressional voting scorecard. Rep. Hoyer voted to protect civil rights on every one of the LCCR’s 23 key votes, among them renewing the Voting Rights Act, opposing attacks on affirmative action, and strengthening legislation against hate crimes.

The LCCR reports that support for civil rights is slowly eroding in the House of Representatives. Only 181 of 435 House legislators can be counted on to stand with the LCCR more than 80% of the time, while 135 Representatives supported less than 20% of civil rights legislation. But Congressman Hoyer remains a strong voice for the equality of all Americans, as this report demonstrates.

Hoyer Receives Top Marks with National Environmental Group

Congressman Hoyer’s efforts to protect the environment were recently recognized after he received a 100% rating from The League of Conservation Voters. The League, a national bipartisan organization devoted to educating citizens about the environmental voting records of federally elected officials, released their annual Congressional Scorecard for 2006 in which every member of congress is given a score according to their voting record on environmental issues.

Not only does Congressman Hoyer support environmentally friendly policy, but he works each year to provide important funding to protect Maryland’s natural resources. For example, Hoyer secured $20.8 million for the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Chesapeake Bay Program Office to address a variety of restoration and water quality issues in Fiscal Year 2006.

"Congressman Hoyer's perfect 100 percent score in 2006 reflects his deep commitment to protecting the environment for his constituents and the nation as a whole," said LCV President Gene Karpinski.
