Pelosi Statement on National Disability Employment Awareness Month“In October, as we observe National Disability Employment Awareness Month, we celebrate the contributions and skills of American workers with disabilities who commit themselves to hard work, every day. “Americans with disabilities want what all Americans want: an equal opportunity to succeed, equal dignity, and equal respect. “Every worker has the right to earn a living through productive work and to be economically self-sufficient. And every American has the right to an independent life and to fully participate in every aspect of our society, education, employment, housing, transportation, and public accommodations. These rights are victories. “And we are right to celebrate these victories this month. But we would be wrong to think that our journey is done; that all the barriers are behind us. Sixteen years after the Americans with Disabilities Act, high unemployment and underemployment rates for people with disabilities persist. “As long as the Bush Administration appoints radical judges and continues to control Congress, Republicans will chip away at the civil rights of Americans with disabilities. Year after year, the Bush Administration proposes cuts to Medicaid, Section 8 housing, vocational rehabilitation, and assistive technology – all of which are essential to fostering independence. As long as this is still happening, our work is not done. It is time for a new direction. “Democrats continue to stand for equal opportunity, equal employment, and equal respect. Democrats honor the National Disability Employment Awareness Month.” |
“ Democrats are united in presenting a New Direction for America, one that will make our nation as strong as its people, one that brings opportunity, security, and prosperity to all Americans. ” Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi |
