Report From Farm Bill Field Hearings

Over the weekend, I had the opportunity to attend two Farm Bill field hearings held by the House Agriculture Committee.  My first stop was in Stockton, California and I then headed to Nebraska City, Nebraska for the second hearing.

One of the benefits of holding these field hearings is that I get to see first-hand the true diversity of American agriculture.  On Friday in California, we were talking primarily with the fruit and vegetable growers.  Then on Saturday in Nebraska, the grain and sorghum producers took center stage.  As you would expect, the needs of California and Nebraska agriculture differ from the needs of Texas agriculture.  I am currently working with the Committee to set up a hearing in Texas so that 19th District producers will have the same opportunity as their counterparts across the country.

Despite the wide diversity of American agriculture, however, there is a common thread that runs through the entire industry.  Whether it is orange growers in California or cotton farmers in West Texas, American producers want a level and fair playing field when it comes to trade.  Reaching and properly enforcing sound trade agreements that level the playing field for our producers has been a priority for me and will remain so in the future.

Academy Forums Slated for March 25

I will be hosting two forums on March 25 to provide information for students interested in learning more about the four U.S. military academies.  I encourage all who can take advantage of this opportunity to do so.  Military Academies can provide excellent educations and open the door to promising career opportunities.

All students, including those currently in middle school, can attend these forums to obtain information on the application process and the educational opportunities at our nation’s military academies.  Parents, counselors, and teachers are also invited.

The day’s first forum will take place in Abilene at Cisco Junior College (Room 152) located at 717 E. Industrial Blvd.  Registration for this forum will begin at 8:30 a.m.  The Lubbock forum will be held in the Science Education Center at the Science Spectrum located at 2579 South Loop 289.  Registration will begin at 1:30 p.m.
