HERSETH AND GOODLATTE MEET WITH SOUTH DAKOTA STOCKGROWERS ASSOCIATION

Congresswoman and Ag Committee Chairman Discuss Issues Important to South Dakota Livestock Industry

February 15, 2006, Washington, D.C. - U.S. Rep. Stephanie Herseth (D-SD) and Agriculture Committee Chairman Bob Goodlatte (R-VA) today met with leadership of the South Dakota Stockgrowers Association in Herseth's Washington, D.C. office. The Stockgrowers are in the nation's capital for their annual fly-in tour.

The group discussed several issues important to the South Dakota livestock industry, including mandatory country-of-origin labeling, animal ID, captive supply, and trade policy matters.

Herseth, who serves on the Agriculture subcommittee for Livestock and Horticulture, said, "The cattle industry is critical not only to South Dakota agriculture but to the entire region's economy. I am pleased to be able to host a meeting to discuss important issues with the Stockgrowers and Chairman Goodlatte."

Chairman Goodlatte said, "I am grateful for the opportunity to meet with the South Dakota Stockgrowers and to hear firsthand their perspective on a range of issues affecting the cattle industry."

Members of Stockgrowers in attendance, and included in photo are Executive Director Carrie Stadheim of Rapid City; Margaret Nachtigal of Owanka; Linda Gilbert of Buffalo; Garrett Clarkson of Ludlow; Herman Schumacher of Herried; Danni Beer of Lemmon and Donna Allen.
