HERSETH CONTINUES PUSH FOR 8 BILLION GALLON RFS –
HEARINGS LIKELY IN HOUSE AG COMMITTEE

Optimistic that Long Delayed Energy Legislation Will Become Law

July 14, 2005, Washington, D.C. – U.S. Rep. Stephanie Herseth today discussed her optimism that comprehensive energy legislation will soon be signed into law and will contain an historic renewable fuels standard. Herseth has been working with a bipartisan coalition of House colleagues, including Agriculture Committee Chairman Bob Goodlatte, to demonstrate strong support for an 8 billion gallon RFS as conferees begin to meet. Earlier this year, the House passed a version of the bill with only a 5 billion gallon requirement.

Herseth said, “This energy bill represents one of the most important economic opportunities for South Dakota in recent memory. Our state’s leaders have worked for years for this victory, and it’s important that we keep working in the coming weeks as the bill is debated in conference.”

Herseth has requested a hearing in the House Agriculture Committee to examine the benefits of renewable fuels as part of our energy policy, and has requested that the hearing take place next week, as conferees begin to work on a negotiated agreement to reconcile, among other things, the different RFS numbers.
