HERSETH: VA SHORTFALL SHAMEFUL, UNACCEPTABLE

House To Consider Emergency Supplemental Appropriation To Ensure VA Has Resources To Provide Health Care to Veterans

June 30, 2005, Washington, D.C. – The U.S. House of Representatives today plans to consider an emergency supplemental appropriation to make up for a recently announced $1 billion budget shortfall for the Veterans Affairs Department. Rep. Stephanie Herseth, a member of the House Veterans’ Affairs Committee, strongly supports authorizing the needed funds, however questions why it requires a funding emergency to recognize the health care needs of our nation’s heroes.

Herseth called the shortfall “shameful and completely unacceptable, particularly in a time of war.” She continued, “This shortfall sends a terrible message to our current troops and their families. Taking care of veterans should be at the top of our list of priorities, not at the bottom. The cost of veterans’ health care should be viewed as an ongoing cost of war, and appropriately funded.”

Over the Memorial Day recess, Herseth held several veterans Town Hall meetings across the state where she heard strong concerns about an inadequate level of funding for veterans health care. Herseth noted that during these meetings it was clear that veterans continue to suffer from long lines and compromised quality of care as a result of the shoestring budget for the VA.

This morning, VA Secretary Jim Nicholson testified before the House Veterans Affairs’ Committee about the shortfall and to request a supplemental appropriation. Yesterday the Senate passed a $1.5 billion measure.
