HERSETH STATEMENT ON EARLY RELEASE OF CRP FOR HAYING AND GRAZING IN 20 SD COUNTIES

July 7, 2006, Washington, D.C. - Today, USDA announced the early release of CRP acres for emergency haying and grazing in the following South Dakota Counties: Beadle, Campbell, Corson, Dewey, Edmunds, Faulk, Hand, Hughes, Hyde, Jerauld, Jones, Lyman, McPherson, Perkins, Potter, Sanborn, Stanley, Sully, Walworth, and Ziebach. The release is effective July 15.

U.S. Rep. Stephanie Herseth has been advocating this release as a recognition of the increasingly severe drought conditions across a large part of South Dakota. Herseth said, "This is a necessary declaration, and I am hopeful that it arrives in time to assist producers who are suffering from what has become a very severe drought. My office has been keeping in close touch with producers throughout the state who have been affected, and this outcome has been a priority for me."

Over recent days and weeks, Herseth and her staff have been in frequent communication with a number of national FSA officials to stress the severity of the drought and the burden it places on South Dakota farm families and communities. Additionally, Herseth joined with South Dakota's senators in writing to USDA Secretary Mike Johanns on June 22 to request the emergency availability of CRP.
