EMERGENCY CONSERVATION PROGRAM FUNDS RELEASED FOR SOUTH DAKOTA PRODUCERS IN 18 COUNTIES

$1.9 Million in ECP Funds Available Through FSA Offices

June 29, 2006, Washington, D.C. - U.S. Rep. Stephanie Herseth announced today that South Dakota producers in 18 counties are eligible to receive Emergency Conservation Program (ECP) funding. Nationwide, USDA allocated approximately $11.8 million in ECP funds. South Dakota's allocation totals $1.963 million, the single highest state allocation.

Herseth said, "This funding is a necessary recognition of the natural disasters faced by producers across South Dakota. In particular, our farmers and ranchers have faced severe drought conditions for several years, and I encourage affected producers in eligible counties to contact their local FSA offices."

The following counties are approved for ECP funding in the State of South Dakota: Campbell, Corson, Dewey, Edmunds, Faulk, Haakon, Hand, Hughes, Hyde, McPherson, Meade, Pennington, Potter, Sanborn, Stanley, Sully, Walworth, & Ziebach

ECP gives producers additional resources to remove debris from farmland, restore fences and conservation structures, provide water for livestock in drought situations and grade and shape farmland damaged by a natural disaster. The program is administered by USDA Farm Service Agency (FSA) state and county committees. Locally-elected county committees are authorized to implement ECP for all disasters except drought, which is authorized at the national office of FSA. Eligible producers will receive cost-share assistance of up to 75 percent of the cost of the approved practice, as determined by FSA county committees.

A fact sheet with details on the ECP program can be found at: http://www.fsa.usda.gov/pas/publications/facts/html/ecp04.htm.

Total ECP funds allocated to South Dakota: $1,963,000
