In order to attend a military service academy, you must meet the requirements specified by public law and must be qualified academically, physically and medically. Each candidate must also obtain a nomination from a member of Congress or from the Department of Army, Navy, Air Force, or Marines.

As a candidate you are evaluated for admission on the basis of academic performance (high school record and SAT or ACT scores), demonstrated leadership potential, physical aptitude and medical qualification. Candidates must obtain a nomination to be considered for appointment to an U.S. Service Academy. It is best to apply for nominations at least one year prior to the desired date of entry.

The nomination and admission process is fully explained in each academy catalog and homepage, as well as in Congressman Hensarling's application packet.

In April of an applicant's junior year in high school, the student should request in writing a nomination from Congressman Hensarling's office. E-mail requests are not accepted.

Please be sure to contact the service academy of your preference to establish your pre-candidate file. Ultimate selection of appointees rests solely with academy officials and is based on their competitive evaluation of all nominees.

To apply for an academy nomination from Congressman Hensarling, you must meet the following requirements:

  • U.S. Citizens
  • Legal Residents of Texas and the 5th District of Texas
  • At least 17 years of age, but not yet 22 years of age by July 1 of the year of admission
  • Unmarried with no dependents
  • By law, graduates of the Service Academies are appointed on active duty as commissioned officers and serve in the appropriate branch of military for a minimum of five years.
