Hastert, Munson highlight community effort to strengthen programmingCARPENTERSVILLE – Congressman J. Dennis Hastert and State Representative Ruth Munson joined members of the Carpentersville Youth Development Collaborative Friday in announcing a multi-faceted approach to providing youth services and programming – and appealed for communitywide support of the effort. Speaking to Carpentersville Middle School students during their “Freedom and Democracy” unit, the elected leaders presented Collaborative plans for future youth programming, and announced a fundraising drive to gain support from the Carpentersville business community. “By launching the Collaborative, we have created a mechanism for community members, parents, and students to work together to support youth programming,” Munson said. “Now we are appealing to the business community and others to assist with the necessary financial support to move this effort forward.” The initial priority is to raise $10,000 in coming weeks to send area students to a special two-week camp providing youth development programming, Munson said. To that end, solicitation letters have been sent to businesses throughout the Carpentersville area. Munson helped create the Carpentersville Youth Development Collaborative in Fall, 2005, to Hastert noted that the effort brings together all aspects of the community to meet a need, and added that he is working to secure federal funding for additional Carpentersville anti-gang efforts. A former high school teacher and wrestling coach, Hastert encouraged students to get involved in the effort through joining the Collaborative’s Youth Advisory Board. “You have been learning about the importance of getting involved in your community, in your government,” Hastert said. “This is no different. The Youth Advisory Board exists solely for your input – so make your opinions known.” Organizations or individuals interested in supporting the effort are asked to contact Munson at 847-622-1048. |
