“We are creating a legacy that our children and future generations will inherit. That legacy should be based on the creation of an opportunity society, starting with a level playing field for all children to begin life in a safe, caring, and loving environment that supports their ability to reach their full potential.”

During last year's WWII Memorial on the National Mall in Washington, Rep. Kind joined a corps of volunteers for the Veterans History Project to conduct on-the-spot interviews with visiting veterans and educate visitors about the effort.

A father of two young boys, Congressman Ron Kind (WI-02) believes it is the responsibility of today’s leaders to leave the country in better shape than they found it for future generations. Through his positions on the Education and the Workforce, Budget and Resources Committees and his leadership roles as a Chief Deputy Whip, Co-Chair of the New Democrat Coalition, and Vice-Chair of the Congressional Sportsmen's Caucus, Rep. Kind has sought to strengthen and preserve the keystone American values of equality, opportunity, community and family for future generations to inherit.

As a member of the Education and the Workforce Committee, Rep. Kind sees the future of the country strongly rooted in a high quality education system and a commitment to policies that will give students and workers the tools and skills they need to compete in the global marketplace. He is concerned that an underinvestment in education and the lack of emphasis on the practical sciences compromise America’s ability to maintain its position as a leader in the 21st century global economy. Among the several education initiatives Kind is working on, one in particular would mandate a greater emphasis on student achievement in math, science and engineering to train the next generation of scientists, engineers, innovators, and teachers in these fields.

Another issue important to Rep. Kind because of its impact on future generations is the federal budget and fiscal responsibility. Through his work on the Budget Committee, Kind has fought to instill the same fiscal discipline that led the surpluses of the 1990’s. Kind believes that responsible government requires responsible budgeting, and that the American people deserve no less than a government that applies the same fiscal discipline that a hard-working American would in crafting a household budget.

While keenly focused on the future, Rep. Kind has also sought to preserve the legacy of the American experience though the creation of the Veterans History Project (VHP), a national project to collect war veterans’ stories. Inspired by his relatives’ personal stories of wartime experiences, Kind introduced legislation creating the VHP to build a national collection of war veterans’ stories and first-hand materials in order to preserve and share their memories in the Library of Congress for Americans today and tomorrow.

Rep. Kind may have his vision focused on the future, but his values are firmly rooted in the traditions of western Wisconsin and the rural communities he represents. Dedication to family, hard work, appreciation of the great outdoors, environmental stewardship, and civic participation are all traditions that Rep. Kind hopes his children and future generations will have the opportunity to experience. His work reflects that hope and inspires him to keep fighting for their future.
