USA Today: Democrats' New Direction Agenda Is Vision for Change

Friday, October 27, 2006

The following letter to the edior by House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi appeared in USA Today this morning:

Democrats' New Direction agenda is vision for change As the editorial "Lessons from off-year races already begin to emerge" points out, the American people have a right to know where Democrats will take our nation (Oct. 20).

Americans have made clear they want change, and they deserve vision. During the past nine months, the House and Senate Democrats have released "A New Direction for America" agenda that works for all, not just for the privileged few.

If the American people entrust Democrats with the leadership of the House of Representatives on Nov. 7, change is exactly what they will get.

In fact, in our first 100 legislative hours in office, we have a bipartisan and achievable plan to:

  • Restore civility to the operations of the House and break the link between lobbyists and legislation.
  • Pass all the recommendations made by the bipartisan and independent 9/11 Commission.
  • Raise the minimum wage.
  • Cut the interest rate in half on student loans.
  • Allow the government to negotiate lower drug prices for Medicare patients.
  • Roll back the multi-billion-dollar subsidies for Big Oil companies and invest instead in energy independence.

This New Direction agenda represents the priorities of a unified Democratic Party, and is our pledge to Americans.

Rep. Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif.

U.S. House of Representatives
