REP. BROWN-WAITE STATEMENT ON INQUIRY INTO CONGRESSMAN FOLEY’S ACTIONS

Washington, D.C., Oct 6 -

"The first I knew of any
inappropriate contact between Congressman Mark Foley and any of the
congressional pages was on Thursday, September 28, 2006.  On that day, I became aware of the email
exchange between Congressman Foley and Congressman Alexander's former page at
the same time as the rest of the country.
Even though this email exchange could be perceived to be innocuous in
nature, as a Member of Congress who has consistently fought to protect children
from predators and who also values the page program, I thought it was incumbent
upon me to look further into this matter.

"Therefore, on Thursday
evening, September 28, 2006, I initiated my own inquiry.  I discovered that Congressman Foley had made
some pages uncomfortable as well as I learned about the now widely reported
incident of when Congressman Foley showed up at the page dorm one night
inebriated.  I did not know about these
incidents until Thursday night.

"On Friday, September
29, 2006, I discussed what I discovered about Congressman Foley with House GOP
leadership.  This is the extent of my
knowledge in this case.  I do not want to
comment any further since there is now an investigation into the circumstances
surrounding these emails and instant messages."
