The taxpayers of America have a good friend in U.S. Rep. Jeff Miller, according to a national group that tracks lawmakers’ votes on taxation and spending measures.
Miller, R-Chumuckla, finished third among all U.S. representatives in the National Taxpayers Union’s survey of votes by members of Congress in 2003.
The group gave him a score of 84 percent out of a possible 100 percent, which earned him an "A" rating and a "Taxpayers’ Friend Award."
"It’s an honor to receive a rating this high from the National Taxpayers Union," Miller said when reached at his Washington, D.C., office on Wednesday.
"This (survey) talks about tax issues, spending issues … it’s an across-the-board" look at how lawmakers view taxation and spending matters, he said.
Miller said one of his important taxrelated decisions in 2003 was voting against a prescription drug package he said had already swelled beyond its original $400 billion price tag.
Miller also cited his support of President Bush’s latest taxcut package. He said tax-related issues will always be "extremely important" to him and his constituents in the 1 st Congressional District.
The National Taxpayers Union describes itself as a nonpartisan organization that monitors all votes Congress members cast on bills related to taxes, spending, debt, and government regulations affecting taxpayers and consumers.
The group assigns weight to votes based on their importance and compiles a score. It says a grade of "A" indicates that a lawmaker "is one of the strongest supporters of responsible tax and spending policies."
Critics of the group dismiss it as a conservative Republican front group whose goal is to damage Democrats.
Other members of Florida’s congressional delegation didn’t fare so well in the survey.
The 2 nd Congressional District’s Allen Boyd, DMonticello, received a "D." Democratic Sens. Bob Graham and Bill Nelson each got an "F."
