Chumuckla, Fl (October 27, 2006) - Congressman Jeff Miller (R-FL-01) praised President Bush today for signing into law H.R. 6061, “The Secure Fence Act of 2006.” This legislation authorizes 700 miles of new fencing along the U.S.-Mexico border in an effort to impede illegal immigration. Miller was a cosponsor of the bill in the House.
“Border security is one of the most pressing national security priorities we face,” said Miller. “Our nation cannot be secure as long as we don’t know who is crossing our borders and taking up residence in our country. I applaud the President for recognizing the threat that an open border poses, and for signing this essential bill into law.”
The “Secure Fence Act” was one of several pieces of legislation passed by the House during the 109th Congress promoting border security. In September, House Republicans also passed the Homeland Security appropriations bill, which provides funding for a variety of border-homeland security priorities, including $1.2 billion for fencing, vehicle barriers, and technology to help achieve operational control of the borders. This bill is also scheduled to be signed into law by the President in the near future.
“I believe that there is a need for an overhaul of the entire Immigration system, however, these policies are a very good start to securing our borders and protecting our national interests,” Miller stated. “I am pleased that my colleagues and I have been able to pass such crucial legislation to protect our borders and our national security.”
