Defense
The First District of Florida is dominated by military facilities. The east-end of the district is all but consumed by Eglin Air Force, while the west-end is home to Pensacola Naval Air Station and Whiting Field. Both PNS and Whiting are primary aviation training facilities. It is here that every naval aviator must successfully complete training, and the reason why every Naval aviator I meet has, at one time, been a constituent of Florida’s first district. Pensacola is a Navy town and supportive of our sailors and Marines.
Eglin Air Force Base is the largest base in the Country. Eglin hosts the Headquarters for the Air Force’s Special Operation Command at Hurlburt Field. Eglin is home to the Air Armament Center and the 46th Test Wing, which provides a national capability for test and evaluation of defense weapons. Additional units include the Nomads of the 33d Fighter Wing, who is a unit of Air Combat Command's 9th Air Force, the 53d Wing, which serves as the focal point for the Combat Air Forces in electronic warfare, armament and avionics, chemical defense, reconnaissance, the 919th Special Operations Wing (919 SOW), an Air Force Reserve Wing found at Duke Field, Camp Rudder (the Army Ranger’s 3rd stage of training) and the Navy’s Explosive Ordinance Disposal School.
Obviously, my assignment to the Armed Services Committee is an honor and an absolute necessity.
