ESHOO ANNOUNCES CRITICAL ENERGY AND WATER FUNDING FOR 14TH CONGRESSIONAL DISTRICT COMMUNITIES

Congresswoman Anna G. Eshoo announced several important community and regional projects which were included in the Energy and Water Appropriations bill, legislation which passed the House today by a vote of 387-36.

"I'm very pleased that Congress has funded these critical projects," Eshoo said. "They are important investments in our communities and region, and I'll continue to fight to see that they are fully implemented."

The funding in the Energy and Water bill includes:

  • San Francisquito Creek
$100,000 will launch an Army Corps of Engineers study on how to address costly flooding of San Francisquito Creek. This has been an uphill battle for three years to fund this effort. Between 1910 and 1998, the Creek flooded seven times. The most recent cresting caused more than $28 million in damage, flooding more than 1,500 homes and forcing Highway 101 to close. Heavy rains last winter almost led to another flood.
  • Port of Redwood City
To ensure that the Redwood City Navigation Channel remains navigable, $200,000 will be provided for additional dredging. This Channel is losing depth at an alarming rate of three feet every six months. Over the past year, the Port has handled a record amount of cargo in ships from around the world and this project will help ensure that the port can continue to handle rising demand for its services.
  • Pillar Point Harbor
The Pillar Point Harbor Breakwater has deteriorated due to storm damage in recent years and the $300,000 in funding secured for Fiscal Year 2004 will be used to help make necessary repairs. The Harbor is home to a vital commercial fishing industry and provides search and rescue services to boaters.
