Comprehensive Enforcement and Immigration Reform Act of 2005

Date Introduced: 07/20/05
Bill Number: S.1438
Description: There is a great need for meaningful immigration reform. Illegal immigration is an enormous problem for our nation, and I support efforts to curb the flood of illegal immigrants coming into the United States every year. We must also look for effective methods to address the millions of illegal aliens currently in the country. These improvements need to be made to discourage illegal immigration and to ensure the safety of the public at large.

I am proud to be a cosponsor of this measure which takes a ground up approach to reform, starting with increased border enforcement and visa security. It will improve interior enforcement of immigration law and includes employer accountability provisions which increase penalties for those who knowingly hire illegal immigrants. S. 1438 provides law enforcement with the means to enforce the law and will implement a “Mandatory Departure” process to address the current illegal population in the United States. Congress must turn its attention to addressing this most important matter, and I believe this legislation is a good start.
