Code Talkers Recognition Act

Date Introduced: 05/13/06
Bill Number: S.1035
Description: Most people are familiar with the heroic contributions and sacrifices made by the Navajo Code Talkers during World War II, Navajo serviceman who used their native language to encode messages between the Allied Forces in World War II. Less well known, however, is the fact that the first Native code talkers were actually members of the Choctaw Nations in World War I. In addition to the Choctaw, code talkers from the Comanche, Sac and Fox, Sioux, and other tribes, in addition to Navajos, courageously served the United States during World War II. The Code Talker Recognition Act would honor those Native American code talkers for their heroic service during World Wars I and II. The bill would officially recognize the role that these servicemen played in our nation’s history and grant gold medals to surviving members and their families.
