Description: Late last year, it was discovered that a number of internet companies were making phone records available for purchase over the internet to anyone who wished to pay for them. Through a process called “pretexting” website operators contact a telephone company pretending to be the owner of the phone line in order to retrieve sensitive account information. The website operators then turn the records over to the party that paid for them.
This legislation prohibits the retrieval of confidential phone records from a telecommunications company through the use of fraud or other unauthorized means. This bill also prohibits the sale of those records and establishes fines and prison sentences for violators. |
