Protecting America's Competitive Edge Through Education and Research Act of 2006

Date Introduced: 01/26/06
Bill Number: S.2198
Description: The purpose of this measure is to uphold America’s technology and science sectors. The Education bill will invest in current and future math and science teachers and K-12 students, as well as support non-energy related basic research. This measure will provide scholarships to those who are seeking baccalaureate and masters degrees in math, science and engineering who are also pursuing a teaching certificate. Additional funds will be awarded through the National Science Foundation to students who teach those subjects in a public elementary or secondary school, or participate in teacher mentoring activities.

S. 2198 will provide K-12 math and science teaching materials, and create a clearinghouse of these materials for distribution to states and school districts. Funds are allocated to strengthen research and development programs and supports developing science parks through grants and loan guarantees so that U.S. science parks are competitive with those throughout Asia.
