Today, Americans across our great nation will pay tribute to the brave men and women who have made it possible for us to live in peace, freedom, and security. Each November, Veterans Day provides us an occasion to take time to remember all those who have served in our nation’s armed forces. I join all Americans in thanking them for their selfless dedication and their sacrifices on behalf of our nation, and I offer my special thanks to the nearly 300,000 veterans from the State of Connecticut.

11/09/06: Statement of Senator Dodd on Nomination of Bolton

October 9, 2006

“The people of our nation sent a very strong message on election day. They want a new tone and direction in Washington. They also want a new policy on Iraq and a fresh start that can help bring this war to a successful conclusion. Sadly, Mr. Bolton doesn’t represent change but a failed status quo. The fact that Mr. Bolton tried to fire intelligence officers for disagreeing with him and has been disdainful of using diplomacy to forge important alliances in the war on terror are evidence of that.  Not surprisingly, there continues to be bipartisan opposition to his nomination.

“Yesterday, American voters spoke loudly and clearly— they told the President and the Congress that it’s time for a new direction here at home and in Iraq.   Today, the President finally acknowledged that we need new leadership at the Pentagon.  But it will take more than a personnel change to take our country in a new direction toward making America safer and respected again around the globe.

Avoiding a one-size-fits-all approach, HAVA set minimum national election standards but left responsibility for implementation to states and localities. Voters are relying on state and local officials to effectively implement the new law while ensuring full compliance and being ready to address problems like those that emerged in primary elections across the country.
