The House Democrats' Innovation Agenda
Congressman George Miller

THE INNOVATION AGENDA
A COMMITMENT TO COMPETITIVENESS TO KEEP AMERICA #1 Democrats in the House of Representatives have laid down an important challenge to Congress and the Country concerning the future of our economy and our place in the world. As chairman of the House Democratic Policy Committee, I am proud to have played a key role in developing The Innovation Agenda, a comprehensive plan and commitment to reinvigorate the public-private partnerships that have generated so much of the economic growth and innovation in our country.

The agenda is bold and exciting. Most importantly, it is necessary.

Here’s our Innovation Agenda:

  • Educate 100,000 new scientists, engineers and mathematicians in four years;
  • Increased commitment to R & D by doubling overall funding for basic research;
  • Accessible and affordable broadband to all Americans within five years;
  • Energy independence within 10 years, and;
  • Strengthen entrepreneurs and small businesses so they can continue to contribute to America's greatest innovations.
  • In her speech unveiling the agenda yesterday, Representative Nancy Pelosi, the House Democratic Leader, said it was urgent that we act. "If America is going to be 1st," she said, "we have to make a decision to be 1st." The fact is, America has been the world leader in scientific and technological innovation because we were committed to being the best and most competitive economy in the world. But the challenge to our economic leadership from new players like India, China and others requires a dramatic new commitment on our part.

    Sincerely,

    George Miller, M.C.

    On February 15, 2006, George Miller and other House Democrats took to the floor of the House to call for Congress to persue the Innovation Agenda this year. Miller said, “We have lost a huge number of manufacturing jobs overseas. We have lost other jobs overseas. This is a fight and a struggle to make sure that there will be new jobs created in America.” Miller talked about the need for a real commitment to education so that America’s young people can compete in the global economy.
