WASHINGTON, DC -- U.S. Rep. George Miller (D-CA), the senior Democrat on the House Education and the Workforce Committee, will seek the Chairmanship of the Committee in the 110th Congress.
Miller said that it is his intention to use the Committee to benefit America’s children, families, and workers. Specifically, the first three priorities for the Committee will be to increase the national minimum wage, reauthorize the No Child Left Behind Act, and make college more affordable.
Miller released the following statement today:
“On Tuesday, voters clearly expressed their desire for a new direction for America. The American people do not believe that simply staying the course – whether in Iraq or here at home – is acceptable any longer.
“Democrats will work in a bipartisan way with Republicans so that, together, we can take our country in a new direction.
“We will work to ensure not only that the economy grows but that all families benefit from it. We will invest in our schools, colleges, and students so that every child has an opportunity to succeed and so that America maintains its economic leadership in the world. And we will fight for the rights and safety of workers.
“To get us started on the path towards these goals, we will act quickly to raise the national minimum wage and to cut interest rates in half on college loans.”
In the coming weeks, Miller will provide details on Education and the Workforce Committee plans and priorities in the 110th Congress.
