Statement of Senator Dodd on Fifth Anniversary of 9/11 Attacks
September 11, 2006

“America will never forget the treacherous and heinous attacks of September 11, 2001. We will never forget the blood that was shed. We will never forget the lives lost. And we will never forget the unfathomable pain inflicted on families forever changed by a loss of a family member or loved one.

“But we will also never forget how our nation responded on that fateful day. There was incredible courage, patriotism, charity and resilience exhibited by every first responder, law enforcement officer, and every citizen across this great nation. The true greatness of our nation’s character and spirit was on display on that day and thereafter.

“While America has made strides in helping to ensure that we are better prepared and protected, it is clear that we need to do much more to make our people and nation safer. That’s why I have fought – and will continue to fight – for more resources for our nation’s first responders and others who each and every day valiantly work to protect our nation. We owe them and the brave men and women in the armed services who are valiantly, selflessly, and courageously shedding blood halfway around the globe nothing less.

“All Americans stand united as one today. We honor the memory of those Americans lost five years ago. We stand united in combating terrorism, now and in the future. And we stand as one in vowing never to forget that while terrorists may have been able to bring down buildings and steal the lives of thousands of good Americans – they will never be able to diminish or steal the unique character, values, and spirit that has been – and will always be – America.”
