HouseDemocrats’ Website Features Congresswoman Barbara Lee

Washington, D.C—Congresswoman Barbara Lee (D-CA) is featured this week on the HouseDemocrats.gov website. Each week, the site, which operates as a clearinghouse on the work and views of House Democratic Members, features a different Democrat.

“The House Democrats webssite serves as an excellent way for Americans to see the individuals behind the policies that are being debated in Congress,” Lee explained.  “Being the featured member gives me an opportunity to highlight the work I’m doing in Congress.”

Lee devotes her website piece to the fight against the global HIV/AIDS pandemic, which kills 3 million people each year around the world. Lee shares information about her recent participation in the 15th International AIDS Conference in Bangkok. (Lee was the only Member of Congress to attend.) “There, I spoke with a number of people from the international community who expressed concerns with the way our Global HIV/AIDS initiative is being implemented,” Lee writes.  “I heard concerns that our HIV prevention policy lacks the proper balance of prevention, treatment and research. I heard complaints that our treatment policies were too focused on protecting patent rights, rather than on channeling life-saving drugs to those who need them.”

“We must also recognize here at home that HIV/AIDS has not been defeated. Today, AIDS is ravaging minority communities throughout the US. We need more targeted outreach to provide culturally-competent prevention information to minority communities so that we can break through the stigma associated with the disease. And we need to break down the barriers to accessing treatment by providing quality, affordable health care for everyone.”
