Congresswoman Barbara Lee Applauds Dr. John Searle Recipient of 2004 National Humanities Medal

Attends White House Medal Ceremony

Washington, DC – Congresswoman Barbara Lee today attended a White House ceremony honoring the 2004 Humanities Medal winners, including University of California at Berkeley professor, Dr. John Searle.

Dr. Searle received his Ph.D. in philosophy at Oxford University and is currently the Mills Professor of the Philosophy of Mind and Language at the University of California at Berkeley.

Professor Searle is best known for his critique of computationalism and artificial intelligence, his theory of intentionality, and his work on the problem of consciousness.

Dr. Searle has won numerous awards, including a distinguished teaching award from the University of California at Berkeley.  He is also a former member of the National Council on the Humanities, where he served from 1992 to 1996.

“The entire East Bay and the 9th Congressional District salute Dr. John Searle and congratulate him on this remarkable honor. I am pleased I was able to attend the ceremony and convey our congratulations in person,” said Lee.
