Congresswoman Barbara Lee Joins Michael Moore in Press Conference on Fahrenheit 911

Lee, Who Appears in Film, Praises Moore's Exposure of Bush Propaganda Machine

Washington, DC - For a press conference today with the Congressional Black Caucus and Michael Moore on Moore's Fahrenheit 911, Congresswoman Barbara Lee (D-CA) issued the following statement:

"Michael Moore has a history of telling the story that needs to be told, exposing the truths often buried under right-wing rhetoric.  And thankfully, Mr. Moore has done this again in Fahrenheit 911.  Mr. Moore tells the American public what many of us have known all along, but have been unable to convey on C-Span the way that Michael Moore does on the big screen."

"Michael Moore's account of this crucial era in American history is important because it exposes the propaganda machine that has been used by the Bush Administration. Sadly, the story of this propaganda machine has continued beyond the film, and the actions that have been taken in the past few weeks and months by Republicans and American corporations to try to stop this movie actually confirms what Fahrenheit 911 conveys: that anything contrary to the beliefs of the Bush Administration will not be tolerated."

"Just this morning, wire reports indicate that the Republicans are going to file a complaint with the Federal Election Commission that somehow this film violates the blackout rules under Shays-Meehan. That is crazy: Mr. Moore is not a political candidate.  In fact, he's not even a registered Democrat."

"This is an issue of free speech, and yet again, the very fact that this complaint is going to be filed is proof again that Republicans will use every means within their power to suppress any message that is counter to their own.  I believe that patriotism involves a willingness to hear other voices, which is what our country is all about: multiple voices, not one voice."
