Congresswoman Barbara Lee Re-Elected As Whip of Congressional Black Caucus

Washington, DC - Congresswoman Barbara Lee today was re-elected Whip of the Congressional Black Caucus (CBC) by unanimous consent of her colleagues.

The Congressional Black Caucus Whip helps develop strategy, count votes, gather and distribute information among the CBC members. Once again, Congresswoman Lee will join the CBC elected leadership, including the newly elected Chairman, Mel Watt (D-NC), in garnering support for key legislation and bringing members of the CBC together in support of a strong CBC and Democratic agenda.

“With a record-high 43 members and under the direction of our new Chairman, Mel Watt

(D-NC), the CBC is better positioned than ever to continue our work as a leading force within the Democratic Caucus,” said Lee. “Indeed, we have a special role in history and a special mandate to help set the agenda and lead within the Democratic Caucus in the 109th Congress.”

"I look forward to working with my colleagues to help forge a common agenda, increase unity, and score legislative victories for our Caucus,” Lee said.

"Now more than ever we must be unified in putting forth an agenda that will protect Social Security, strengthen public schools, ensure that nominees to the Supreme Court will uphold the Constitution, and combat social and racial inequalities that still exist."

Congresswoman Lee was elected CBC Whip in the 108th Congress, and was re-elected unanimously for her ability to bring colleagues to consensus on important legislation and CBC initiatives. Under her leadership, the CBC alternative budget received record support.

"I would like to thank my colleagues for their continued support and confidence. I also want to congratulate the newly elected leadership of the CBC," said Lee. "I look forward to working with all the members to address the challenges and opportunities that we will face together in the 109th Congress."
