As a senior member of the House Resources Committee, which oversees many environmental and resource programs, Congressman Gallegly has long worked for the preservation of natural resources while not placing onerous and unnecessary regulations on businesses and landowners, a process he calls commonsense environmentalism. He has supported legislation to limit oil drilling off the California coast; measures to protect wetlands and other sensitive areas through reauthorization of the Clean Water Act; bills to ensure the preservation of coastal areas through the Coastal Zone Management Act; and legislation to protect private property rights.
