Statement of Correction
Rep. Barney
Frank’s office today released the following fact sheet to dispel right-wing
disinformation about Congressman Frank. Lately, several journalists and
bloggers have reported on the past actions of Congressman Barney Frank, but
many have had incorrect facts. What follows are the facts:
- In 1990,
the House of Representatives acted on a recommendation of the House
Committee on Standards of Official Conduct, also known as the Ethics
Committee, and reprimanded Rep. Frank on two specific items: fixing
parking tickets and writing a letter to a probation officer on behalf of
Mr. Gobie.
- This was
the only official action taken against Rep. Frank, who apologized and
accepted punishment by the House.
- The Ethics
Committee concluded Mr. Frank was not aware and had no knowledge of any
alleged illegal or unseemly activities occurring at his Capitol Hill
apartment and also found that Mr. Gobie had exaggerated the facts to news
reporters. The Committee reported that as soon as Mr. Frank found out
about these activities, he fired Mr. Gobie and severed any ties to him.
The committee discovered several instances where Mr. Gobie made
misstatements to both the committee and news media thereby damaging his
credibility.
- Mr.
Gobie’s anger at Mr. Frank for being fired in 1987, in Mr. Frank’s
opinion, led Mr. Gobie to damage Mr. Frank in the press. Unfortunately
for Mr. Gobie, Mr. Frank came out in May of 1987, leaving Mr. Gobie’s
accusations more fiction than fact. Clearly, had the Ethics Committee
believed a substantial element of Gobie’s accusations, the committee would
have recommended a more severe punishment.
