The Republican-passed prescription drug bill doesn’t benefit America’s seniors and the disabled; instead, it benefits big drug manufacturers and insurance companies. That is why Democrats want to repeal this harmful legislation, and replace it with a bill that works for people on Medicare. The benefit that Democrats continue to fight for would be:
- Affordable -- with reasonable premiums and deductibles -- designed to significantly reduce the price of prescription drugs.
- Meaningful -- with defined, guaranteed benefits -- no gaps or gimmicks.
- Within the Medicare program -- not a separate privatized plan that lets HMOs make all the decisions about costs and benefits.
- Available to all seniors and disabled Americans on Medicare no matter where they live -- rural or urban -- or what their incomes are.
The Republican-written Medicare bill breaks Medicare's promise, a promise that Democrats created and defended despite 40 years of Republican opposition. Democrats will continue to work to bring down the cost of prescription drugs in America to help Americans achieve a secure and healthy retirement. Learn more! Sign up to join our e-mail network!

“ Under the Republican's plan, millions of seniors that choose to remain in traditional Medicare would see their premiums rise. In a study of the effects on premiums under the proposed legislation some beneficiaries would pay up to three times as much as others for some Medicare services. This is unconscionable. Equity has always been a fundamental tenet of Medicare. All seniors deserve a fair deal. ”
Rep. Marion Berry (D-AR)
