Women & Children

Congressman Bob Filner is a long-time advocate for women and children:
  • Ensuring opportunities for children
Bob is supporting many bills to ensure that children have the opportunity for a healthy, productive and successful life--legislation that protects our children from violence and provides them with the education, healthcare, quality after-school programs, nutrition, and shelter that they need. Two of the many bills for children that he is supports are H.R. 2000, the Focus on Committed and Underpaid Staff for Children’s Sake (Focus Act), which makes funding available for the provision of quality child care, and H.R. 2508, the Foster Opportunities for Success through Higher Education Reform (Foster Act), which improves the ability of foster care youth to attend and succeed in higher education. He is also working with grassroots organizations towards the goal of ending worldwide poverty within a decade.
  • Responding to violence against women
He strongly supports the re-authorization of the Violence against Women Act, which provides federal criminal provisions and grant programs to improve the criminal justice system’s response to domestic violence, sexual assault, and stalking--and to provide critical services to victims. It also established a domestic violence hotline, supports battered women’s shelters and rape prevention programs, and contains a provision to help stop the international trafficking of human beings.
  • Standing up for Afghan and Iraqi women
Bob has also been a strong advocate of humanitarian aid for women and children in Afghanistan. Since 1996, when the Taliban took reign of the country, Afghan women lost most of their rights including the freedom of speech and the ability to receive an education. Afghan women’s rights are important to Bob, and he continues to work with other Members of Congress to ensure that women in Afghanistan can return to their pre-Taliban jobs and activities as political officials, teachers, and doctors. He looks forward to seeing several women who hold cabinet positions in Afghanistan’s new government serve as role models for women, and he also supports a similar role for Iraqi women in developing their new government.
  • Calling for an End to Murders
Bob has supported legislation that encourages increased U.S. efforts to bring an end to the murders of young women in Ciudad Juarez, Mexico.
