Increasing Border Security To Protect Our Communities

Chet opposes amnesty for illegal aliens and believes it is essential that we strengthen the security at our borders to protect our communities. To do this, Chet believes we must increase the number of border security agents, put an end to the "catch and release” program, and establish a nationally approved employer verification system so that U.S. employers can verify whether or not job applicants are legal residents or citizens.

Some of his accomplishments include:

  • Voting successfully to add 2,700 additional border patrol agents.
  • Voting seven times for amendments to increase funding for Border Security that would have added 6,000 additional border patrol agents, but were voted down along partisan lines.
  • Voting in favor of a $2.3 billion increase for border security in the FY07 Department of Homeland Security Appropriations bill that would result in 1,200 additional border patrol agents and 4,870 additional detention beds.
  • Voting for the Border Protection, Antiterrorism, and Illegal Immigration Control Act H.R. 4437 in 2005, which has passed the House and makes the presence of illegal aliens in the United States a criminal offense and ends the “catch and release” program to prevent illegal aliens from committing crimes and avoiding court dates.

Chet does not believe that illegal aliens should be eligible to receive any federal taxpayer funded benefits such as food stamps and voted in 1996 to make illegal aliens ineligible for all federal benefits, including food stamps, retirement, welfare, health, disability, public or assisted housing, postsecondary education, unemployment benefit, or any other similar benefit. The 1996 law is still the law of the land today.
