September 9, 2005

Congressman Dan Lungren (R-Gold River) announced Wednesday that representatives from his staff and four service academies will be available to meet with high school students interested in attending a military academy.

Lungren is permitted to nominate a limited number of students to the United States Military Academy, United States Naval Academy, United States Air Force Academy and the United States Merchant Marine Academy. “Attending one of our nation’s prestigious military academies is a privilege and one that I want to make available to interested and qualified students of my district,” he said.

The event will take place on Thursday, Sept. 22 from 5 to 7 p.m. at The Veterans of Foreign Wars Hall, 8990 Kruithof Way, Fair Oaks 95628. Academy representatives will be present to answer questions and provide an overview of their specific academy’s requirements and benefits.

Service academies allow young men and women to serve our country while earning a quality education. A four-year scholarship is awarded to qualified students along with the opportunity to serve in our nation’s armed forces. Upon the acceptance of appointment into an Academy, a student commits to five years of active duty service after graduation.

Applicants must be U.S. citizens and be at least 17 years old, but not have passed their 23rd birthday by July 1 of the year of admission. Applicants must reside within the 3rd Congressional District of California. Applications are due in Lungren’s district office no later than Oct. 21.
